At one time R42a meant the max load our rectifiers could take.  I've long since made them stronger so now it's just a part number.  It seemed to be a lot less trouble than renaming the parts...
Rectifier for 1960s and 1970s Honda twins and singles.  After 1968, Honda used the female plug on the rectifier more than other configurations.

Model R42a1
Honda mostly used the female plug on rectifiers on single and twins cylinder bikes 250cc and larger.  There are a couple notable exceptions like the SL350 that could have either and the 4 speed CB450 that takes our R42a2 rectifier.  When in doubt, always check the plug on your old rectifier.  The way Honda changed the connector on some their bikes over the years defies logic...
This is the same as the above rectifier but if with longer wires.  The R42a1-XL comes with 12" wires.

Rectifier for 1960s and 1970s Honda twins and singles that take a rectifier with a male plug.

This rectifier is shipped with the plug loose becuase there are a couple different arrangments for the wires on some of these bikes.  You will have to insert the wires to match the plug on your bike.

The model R42a2 fits all of the 250 and 305cc twins from 1962 to around 1968.  Also the 150cc Benley and 160cc twins.  The 4 speed Honda 450 also can use this rectifier.

Model R42a - 4 Post rectifier for British bikes and for custom fitting to many 1960's Japanese bikes.  Included is a ground wire and 4 new push on spade terminals and heat shrink tubing to insulate them.

Our R42a replaces this rectifier found on many British bikes.  The first one I made went on a 1966 BSA A65 I had many years ago...
Our R42a2 replaces this rectifier found on pre1968 Honda Singles and twins that take a 3 wire rectifier.
Our rectifier replace these typically found on late 1960's and 1970's  Honda singles and twins up to around 1978 and the CB125s up to around 1980
